📚 REFLECTION

Suffering is the part and parcel of human life. Not only the sinners or wrong doers but many times innocent and just people also suffer. No matter where we go there would be in different forms and measures troubles and sufferings await us. However, it is not the troubles that define us but the way we face and undergo them defines our character.

State or Feeling of being abandoned is highly disparaging state to be in. We need to summon our faith in God in such moment. God alone can assure us of our safety and security.

Prophets were almost synonym to suffering and persecution. They were constantly harassed and persecuted. And most of them met with violent end. Their fault was being God’s voice amidts an ocean of evil. People tried to be friendly with them to influence them into their favour but when they refused to compromise, they persecuted them. Prophet Jeremiah suffered a great deal of persecution. He feels terribly surrounded by miserly piled upon him by friends and foealike yet there is a difference between the misery of others and his. In his pathetic situation he remembers ‘Yahweh’ his God. he realises that God is not only present there or merely an onlooker on his situationbut is an active companion. And He is able to save him from this impossible situation and mighty enemy. With this faith and hope he is confident of his victory over his enemies and success in his mission.

Jesus forewarns his disciples of the persecution that would eventually and inevitably come in their work. However, there is nothing to be panicked since God is in control of everything. To be sure of God’s presence and believe in his power in abysmal situation is the real and salvific faith. Azaria, micheal etc. refused to bow down and worship the statues of the king. They were ready to be burned alive. It wasn’t that they weremerely ready to die but they were ready to undergo it with an active and open faith towards God, “If our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire and out of your hand, O king, let him deliver us. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods and we will not worship the golden statue that you have set up.’.” (Daniel 3:17-18)So while we suffer, we believe that God is able to save us yet even if we perish, we know that it is the will of the father and not the victory or supremacy of our enemies over us. Job suffered a series of disasters at the hands of robbers and weather, but he said, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:21) He knew that his good God was in charge, and with broken heart trusted Him. Often, we want our “bitter cup” to pass from us; but true trust in God says, “May Thy will and not my will be done.” (Luke 22:42)

Jesus’ cry from the cross, “Eli, Eli, lemasabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’” (Matthew 27:46) is not the sign of hopelessness butan expression of his union with the father. Even in his abandonment he remembered his God.

Haggar had a terrible time with her mistress Sarah. She even ran away from her house. While she was in the desert God spoke to her and tried to make sense out of her suffering. He assures her that she is not alone but her life and situation are very much in the divine plan. Haggar was ready to go back to her mistress and be subjected to her ill-treatment because she experienced that God is watching over her. She famouslyproclaims, “El Roi”, which means I have seen the one who sees me’. (Genesis 16:13) Now the suffering of Haggar has a meaning and a companion in the person of God. Jesus assures us that not even a bird falls down without the knowledge of God and as for human beings God care much more than the birds. It is easy to imagine that the biggest parts of our lives were planned but even the smallest details too were known to God. it is hard to grasp but when we truly believe it God mixes with our situation and when God accompanies us then the suffering becomes a walk with God. The journey becomes lessons and milestones to remember.

On the contrary when the wrong doers suffer, they have within them deep regret and agony. They feel abandoned and lonely. They had no one to care about. Their suffering leads them to doom. When the world faces wars, pandemics, natural disasters, economic collapses, etc., fear can grip us; but when we Know our heavenly Father is in charge, the fear can be removed. Ps. 33:18-19 says, “But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him…to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.”

God is able to weave even our wrong choices into the great tapestry of His will and make them work for our good. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…” Paul didn’t say everything was good, but that it worked out for the good! So let us rejuvenate our faith in God and remind ourselves that he sees us and companies us in our good and bad times.
