8) एलीशा किसी दिन शूनेम हो कर जा रहा था। वहाँ की एक धनी महिला ने उस से अनुरोध किया कि वह उसके यहाँ भोजन करे। इसके बाद, जब-जब उसे वहाँ हो कर जाना था, तो वह उसके यहाँ भोजन करता था।
9) उसने अपने पति से कहा, "मुझे विश्वास है कि जो हमारे यहाँ भोजन करने आया करते हैं, वह एक ईश्वर-भक्त सन्त हैं।
10) हम छत पर एक छोटा-सा कमरा बनवायेंं। हम उस में पलंग, मेज़, कुर्सी और दीपक रख दें। जब वह हमारे यहाँ आयेंगे, तो उस में विश्राम करेंगे।"
11) एलीशा किसी दिन आया और छ़त पर चढ़ कर वहाँ सो गया।
14) एलीशा ने कहा, "मैं उस महिला के लिए क्या कर सकता हूँ?" उसके सेवक गेहज़ी ने उत्तर दिया, "उसके कोई पुत्र नहीं है और उसका पति बूढ़ा है"।
15) एलीशा ने कहा, "उसे बुलाओ"। उसने उसे बुलाया और वह द्वार पर खड़ी हो गयी।
16) तब एलीशा ने कहा, "अगले वर्ष, इसी समय तुम्हारी गोद में पुत्र होगा"। उसने उत्तर दिया, "नही ईश्वर-भक्त! अपनी दासी को झूठा आश्वासन नहीं दीजिए"।
3) क्या आप लोग यह नहीं जानते कि ईसा मसीह का तो बपतिस्मा हम सबों को मिला है, वह उनकी मृत्यु का बपतिस्मा हैं?
4) हम उनकी मृत्यु का बपतिस्मा ग्रहण कर उनके साथ इसलिए दफनाये गये हैं कि जिस तरह मसीह पिता के सामर्थ्य से मृतकों में से जी उठे हैं, उसी तरह हम भी एक नया जीवन जीयें।
8) हमें विश्वास है कि यदि हम मसीह के साथ मर गये हैं, तो हम उन्ही के जीवन के भी भागी होंगे;
9) क्योंकि हम जानते हैं कि मसीह मृतको में से जी उठने के बाद फिर कभी नहीं मरेंगे। अब मृत्यु का उन पर कोई वश नहीं।
10) वह पाप का हिसाब चुकाने के लिए एक बार मर गये और अब वह ईश्वर के लिए ही जीते हैं।
11) आप लोग भी अपने को ऐसा ही समझें-पाप के लिए मरा हुआ और ईसा मसीह में ईश्वर के लिए जीवित।
37) जो अपने पिता या अपनी माता को मुझ से अधिक प्यार करता है, वह मेरे योग्य नहीं है। जो अपने पुत्र या अपनी पुत्री को मुझ से अधिक प्यार करता है, वह मेरे योग्य नहीं।
38) जो अपना क्रूस उठा कर मेरा अनुसरण नहीं करता, वह मेरे योग्य नहीं।
39) जिसने अपना जीवन सुरक्षित रखा है, वह उसे खो देगा और जिसने मेरे कारण अपना जीवन खो दिया है, वह उसे सुरक्षित रख सकेगा।
40) "जो तुम्हारा स्वागत करता है, वह मेरा स्वागत करता है और जो मेरा स्वागत करता है वह उसका स्वागत करता है, जिसने मुझे भेजा है।
41) जो नबी का इसलिए स्वागत करता है कि वह नबी है, वह नबी का पुरस्कार पायेगा और जो धर्मी का इसलिए स्वागत करता है कि वह धर्मी है, वह धर्मी का पुरस्कार पायेगा।
42) "जो इन छोटों में से किसी को एक प्याला ठंडा पानी भी इसलिए पिलायेगा कि वह मेरा शिष्य है, तो मैं तुम्हें विश्वास दिलाता हूँ कि वह अपने पुरस्कार से वंचित नहीं रहेगा।
अतिथि सत्कार एक महान सदगुण है। उदार हृदय के लोग जरूरतमंदों के लिये अपने संसाधनों के द्वार खोल देते हैं। ईश्वर उनकी इस उदारता को देखता तथा समयानुसार उन्हें इसका उचित फल प्रदान करता है। येसु उन लोगों को महान पुरस्कार का आश्वासन देते हैं जो नबियों का स्वागत-सत्कार करते हैं।
अतिथि सत्कार तथा उसके पुरस्कार का ठोस उदाहरण हम आज के पहले पाठ में पाते हैं जिसमें शुनेम की महिला नबी एलीशा की पवित्रता को पहचान उन्हें भोजन देती है फिर अपने पति से कहकर उनके रहने के लिए एक कमरे का निर्माण करती है। वह महिला अपनी सम्पत्ति में से एलीशा के लिये खर्च करती है क्योंकि वह समझती है वह ईश्वर का सेवक है। उस महिला ने इसके एवज में कुछ पाने की आशा या इच्छा नहीं रखी थी। उसकी सेवा पूर्ण रूप से निस्वार्थ थी।
नबी एलीशा भी उसकी इस उदारता देखकर सोच रहे थे कि वे इस महिला का कैसे उद्धार कर सकते हैं। तब उनका नौकर गेहजी बताता है कि उस महिला की कोई संतान नहीं है। यह निष्कर्ष आसानी से निकाला जा सकता है कि संतान प्राप्ति उस महिला की तीव्र अभिलाषा थी। तो नबी एलीशा उसे पुत्र प्राप्ति की प्रतिज्ञा करता है। और समय आने पर उस नबी की प्रतिज्ञानुसार उसे पुत्र प्राप्त होता है। जो उदारता उसने नबी के प्रति दिखायी थी उसके बदले में पुत्र की प्राप्ति उस महिला के लिये कहीं अधिक बडा वरदान था।
नबी के प्रति उस महिला की उदारता धीरे-धीरे बढती है। पहले-पहल वह उनका स्वागत करती एवं भोजन प्रदान करती। इसके बाद वह अपने पति से पूछकर उनके लिये एक कमरा बनवाती है जिससे नबी अपनी यात्रा के दौरान सहूलियत से रह सके। इसी प्रकार जब ईश्वर उस महिला का आशिष देना चाहते थे तो वे उसे भी धीरे-धीरे किन्तु प्रचुरता में वरदान देते हैं। ईश्वर ने उसे पुत्र दिया, फिर उसका पुत्र मर कर भी जीवित हुआ, सात साल के अकाल की पूर्व-सूचना, संयोग, उसकी भूमि का पुनः प्राप्त होना, सात साल जमीन से हुयी आमदनी का मिलना आदि। ईश्वर उन सभी को पुरस्कृत करता है जो कृतज्ञ हृदय से ईश्वर के प्रति उदार रहते हैं।
अतिथि सत्कार तथा उदारता का हमारे धर्म में बहुत महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है। बाईबिल ईश्वर के राज्य को एक शानदार राजसी भोज के रूप में भी चित्रित करता है। उत्पत्ति ग्रंथ 18 इब्राहिम और सारा के उदार अतिथि सत्कार के बारे में बताता है जब उन्होंने तीन मुसाफिरों का स्वागत किया। उन अतिथियों ने इब्राहिम और सारा को एक पुत्र की प्रतिज्ञा की। हालांकि इब्राहिम जानता नहीं था कि वे तीनों हकीकत में स्वर्गदूत थे।
धर्मग्रंथ हमें बताता है कि ’’मानव पुत्र के लिए सिर रखने को भी अपनी जगह नहीं थी।’’ (मत्ती 8:20) तो येसु को दूसरों के अतिथि सत्कार पर निर्भर रहना पडता था। येसु भी अपने मेजबानों को आशिष एवं वरदान दिया करते थे। काना के विवाह भोज में जहां वे अतिथि थे वे पानी को अंगूरी में परिवर्तित कर मेहबानों का सम्मान बचाते हैं। मारथा और मरियम के घर जब वे भोजन करने गये तो उन्होंने मरियम द्वारा चुने स्थान को श्रेष्ठ करार दिया। उन्होंने इसी प्रकार जकेयुस के घराने को मुक्ति प्रदान की। जब वे पेत्रुस के घर गये तो उन्होंने उसकी सास को चंगा किया।
येसु भी हमें अंनत अतिथि सत्कार की प्रतिज्ञा करते हुये कहते हैं, ’’मेरे पिता के यहाँ बहुत से निवास स्थान हैं। यदि ऐसा नहीं होता, तो मैं तुम्हें बता देता क्योंकि मैं तुम्हारे लिये स्थान का प्रबंध करने जाता हूँ। मैं वहाँ जाकर तुम्हारे लिये स्थान का प्रबन्ध करने के बाद फिर आऊँगा और तुम्हें अपने यहाँ ले जाउँगा, जिससे जहाँ मैं हूँ, वहाँ तुम भी रहो।’’ (योहन 14:2-3) इस जीवन में भी येसु हमारा अतिथि सत्कार करते हुये कहते हैं, ’’थके-माँदे और बोझ से दबे हुए लोगो! तुम सभी मेरे पास आओ। मैं तुम्हें विश्राम दूँगा।’’ (मत्ती 11:18) येसु वे शाश्वत मुसाफिर है जो हमारे अतिथि सत्कार पाने के लिये उत्सुक रहते हैं, ’’मैं द्वार के सामने खड़ा हो कर खटखटाता हूँ। यदि कोई मेरी वाणी सुन कर द्वार खोलेगा, तो मैं उसके यहाँ आ कर उसके साथ भोजन करूँगा और वह मेरे साथ।’’ (प्रकाशना 3:20)
येसु कहते हैं, ’’दो और तुम्हें भी दिया जायेगा। दबा-दबा कर, हिला-हिला कर भरी हुई, ऊपर उठी हुई, पूरी-की-पूरी नाप तुम्हारी गोद में डाली जायेगीय क्योंकि जिस नाप से तुम नापते हो, उसी से तुम्हारे लिए भी नापा जायेगा।’’ (लूकस 6:38)
ईश्वर हमको इतनी प्रचुरता में कृपायें एवं वरदान देते है कि हमारी झोली भर जाती तथा बर्तन छलकने लगते हैं। किस प्रकार की कृपा येसु देना चाहते हैं? ये वित्तिय मदद हो सकती है या फिर ईश्वर हमारे समय, परिवारों, आपसी रिश्तों, वैवाहिक जीवन, बच्चों, स्वास्थ्य, पढाई लिखाई, हुनर, अच्छी संगती, घर में शांति तथा सम्पन्नता आदि को प्रदान कर हमें हमारे अतिथि सत्कार तथा उदारता का पुरस्कार प्रदान करते हैं।

Providing hospitality to people in needy is a noble virtue. People with generous heart and openness to the need of the others open the doors of their resources for them. God sees their generosity and blesses them abundantly in due time. Jesus promises a great reward to those who extend hospitality to people who come in God’s name.
The telling example of hospitality and the reward we find in today’s first reading 2Kings 4:8-16 where a noble woman of Shunem recognised the holiness of the prophet Elisha and extended initially meals and then a guest room to the Prophet. She told her husband that she wanted to build a small addition onto the home to give Elisha his own furnished room whenever he came. Then he would be able to come and relax there.This woman was generously spending her family’s money to provide hospitality for this man who served God. Now this woman didn’t do this to “get” anything. She didn’t make a deal with God that if she built this room for Elisha, she expected certain things back from God. She seemingly just gave as God led her.
In return Elisha too wondered aloud if there was a way that he could bless her and his servant Gehazi mentioned that she didn’t have a son. Evidently it was a real desire of her heart that so far had not been fulfilled. So, Elisha the prophet promised her a son. And God’s blessing came through as Elisha promised! The blessing of a child was a far greater blessing to her than she herself had even been to Elisha.
Her hospitality to the prophet was gradual. At first cordial welcome and meals than a furnished room built for him. Now when God wanted to bless her, He too bless her abundantly but gradually. God’s gifts to her included, the birth of a son, the resurrection of her son, advance warning of a seven-year famine and then coincidence, God made sure she received her land back – plus, income of the seven years!God is an incredible rewarder to those who give to Him out of a grateful heart.
Hospitality and generosity are hugely appreciated in Christianity. The Bible pictures the kingdom of heaven as a generous, even extravagant, banquet (Isa. 25:6-9; Matt. 22:2-4).
In Genesis 18 the story of Abraham and Sarah’s generous hospitality to three visitors who came to them by the oaks of Mamre is told. Abraham was blessed when he welcomed the guests with a promise of a child. Although Abraham did not know that they were angels.
In the Scriptures we read of Jesus, that he had no place to lay his head and obviously had to depend upon the hospitality of many people during his public ministry and in return he blessed many of them as mentioned in the gospel. He provided the best wine at the wedding feast of Cana where he was invited. Jesus appreciated the gesture of Mary during his stay at the house of Martha and Mary. Similarly, he blessed the household of the Zacchaeus. He healed the mother in law of Peter during his stay at his house.
Jesus promised us an eternal hospitality in heaven, My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?’” (John 14:1-2). Even on earth he extends welcome. When we feel heavy Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
He is in fact an eternal sojourner who would like to have our hospitality as he says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me”. (Rev.3:20)
Jesus says, “GIVE, and IT WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. for with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."(Luke 6:38)
God will reward us in such abundance of blessings that they will be overflowing our basket and filling the robe in our lap. What kind of giving is Jesus talking about? He could mean money, but He could also be referring to anything of ours that we give away – time, concern for others, encouragement, money or other material things.God may give back to us in many ways. In His miraculous way He can choose to bless us financially through finding us good deals, preventing high expenses, preventing medicals issues or by providing raises or more hours and overtime.But it could be also be that God bless our “giving” by rewarding us with unexpected time to relax even though we had given away time to serve others.
It could be that God miraculously bless our marriage, restores relationships or health or any number of good things.Those who give time regularly to serving others in their parishes, family and community are not shortchanged in the long run.Providentially, God takes care of the time needs of those who gave time, the financial needs of those who give financially and the encouragement needs of those who give encouragement.
